Lyrics from Anytime Anywhere CD

Anytime, Anywhere

I’m an older woman now
Doesn’t mean that I am dead
More than anything, it means
I’m more alive inside my head
I’m not talking ethereal
We’re physically bred
I can talk you in circles
And I can talk you into bed

CHORUS:

‘Cause it only gets better
And it only gets smarter
It’s sweet and it’s sexy
It’s softer and harder
And it’s all about the comfort
And it’s all about the dare
So I’ll take you anytime, anywhere

I’m a married woman now
Doesn’t mean that I am blind
There’s so much more to see but only one to take the time
I’m talking fidelity
‘Cause we’re physically fine
I can talk you in circles
And I talk because you’re mine

CHORUS:

Slowly I’m turning the wheels of my world
Twisting through time both a woman and a girl
Passions beat brighter if you take the time to burn
And if you take the time, time takes a turn

I’m a different woman now
I’m no longer aloof
More than ever when you touch me
Well, it sends me through the roof
I’m talking ecstatically
‘Cause we’re physically fed
I can talk you in circles
And you can talk me into bed

When the Wind Blows

Graffiti on the rooftops
Antennae from the fifties
A boulevard so broken by the beat
The train coughs out the lonely
On their way to work and home
And I make my way down sentimental streets
I board the battered bus and I take the easy seat
Staring at the stares of starving faces
Riding to Manhattan with the day to day survivors
Through their neighborhoods and sacramental places

Buildings boarded over
Old men on the sidewalks
A town that tells the history of ages
Each person has a story
You can see it in their walk
You can read between their lines and turn their pages
But I live far away where the grass appears much greener
Where you often might forget to lock the door
Though we’re all one on this planet, we’ve got different ways of coping
We’re given each a lot that’s less or more

And I clatter on my way
And I chatter through the day
And I look at people’s lives through their windows
Into town and back
On another beaten track
Wondering how they weather when the wind blows

So you’ll see me in a cafe
Or walking to the subway
And I’ll try to catch your eye if I am able
If I only had the nerve
Or maybe took a chance
I’d offer you a seat across the table
But we live each alone in our solitary shelter
Where we never take for fear of also giving
We tend to turn away, speaking silence to the masses
And wondering how we’ll find the key to living

And we clatter each alone
And we chatter on the phone
And we look at people’s lives through their windows
Into town and back
On another beaten track
Wondering how we’ll weather when the wind blows

When the wind blows……

So if you need a bit of company
An ear or just a voice
Then call someone if only but in passing
You may well get lucky
And find a kindred soul
Who wonders how we’ll weather when the wind blows
Well, I wonder how we’ll weather when the wind blows
When the wind blows

Trouble

I kissed you once, I kissed you twice
And then again, Oh God, I’m in trouble
I touched you once, I touched you twice
And then again, Oh God, I’m in trouble
I watched you walk right by me
Had to hold myself down
Had to hold myself in
Had to hold onto something for dear life
I caught your eye a’wandering
Had to sit myself down
Had to take a deep breath
Had to hold onto something for dear life

So I smiled once, I smiled twice
And then again, Oh God, I’m in trouble
Said hello to you once, said hello to you twice
And then again, Oh God, I’m in trouble
I heard you talking to someone
Had to try not to listen
Had to try not to breathe
Had to hold onto something for dear life
Thought you might have said something to me
Had to feign not to hear
Had to turn a deaf ear
Had to hold onto something for dear life

‘Cause it wasn’t safe, and it wasn’t clear
I wasn’t free, Oh God, I’m in trouble
But it seemed so good, and it seemed so right
It seemed so clear, Oh God, I’m in trouble
I took a big chance on love
Couldn’t hold myself down
Couldn’t hold myself in
Couldn’t hold onto anything but dear life
I stepped right into the void
I took one giant leap
“Mother May I?”  I cried
I had to let go of everything for dear life

Now I sit down beside you
And I don’t hold myself down
I don’t hold myself in
‘Cause I can hold onto you for dear life

End of Glory

Curtis died the other day
It was somewhere in the news
They said it was pneumonia
But I think it was the blues
His wife of over fifteen years
Had left him without warning
I think he couldn’t face the nights
And even less the mornings

How could he not have had a clue
There were red flags everywhere
Like how she always pulled away
When he tried to touch her hair
And how she always cut him off
If he ever tried to speak
Everyone but Curtis knew
And had known for several weeks

CHORUS:

But love dies hard for those who live
In some forgotten story
But for Curtis it was more than pain
It was the end of glory

I’d seen him in his last few days
His weight was falling thin
He couldn’t seem to concentrate
And you’d never see him grin
And “Why?” was all you’d ever hear
If you ever got him speaking
I think he couldn’t face the days
And even less the weekends

CHORUS

I thank God that we don’t all succumb
To heartbreak’s deepest depths
‘Cause when I heard that Curtis fell
I wept, I wept, I wept and I wept
Oh I wept

How could he not have ever known
There were signs on every street
Like how she always turned away
And their eyes would never meet
And how she cut him to the quick
If he ever criticized
Somewhere deep down Curtis knew
‘Cause you could see it in his eyes

CHORUS

Curtis died the other day
And I think it was the blues

The Eyes of God

Driven by a need for grandeur
As the world falls down around us every day
We’ve got actors in the races
We’ve got liars in the lead
We’ve got bullet holes as architecture
And wounds that always bleed
While families starve everyday
And a brother comes home in a bag
We’re rife with retribution
As if it all comes down to war
That peace is not a prophecy
But settling a score
Is our right as human beings
In the Eyes of God

I’ve got lakes all around me
But I dare not set a foot upon the shore
Pollution’s marking sorely
Across the currents of our lives
There are solutions clear and possible
But politics decide
So I dare not test the water’s depth
I dare not taste the water deep
We turn our backs on the answers
As if it all comes down to greed
If we only cared beyond the buck
We’d understand the need
To live as our lives as humans
In the Eyes of God

CHORUS:

In the eyes of God
We throw that phrase out lightly
Like we possibly could understand
We dare to think we know
We would walk this earth so lightly
If only we could fathom
What’s behind the Eyes of God

So we march in boot and loud command
That this country could demand the fate of all
That a president could dictate
What is absolute and wrong
That everything is fixable
And everyone is strong

In the land of free and the home of brave
As if culture doesn’t rock the rule
We allow ourselves to follow hard
Shut off from belief
In something we should know by now
From time and war and grief
We’ve got the right to live as humans
In the Eyes of God

CHORUS

Drivin’

It’s a gorgeous night
There’s a plane in the sky
And I’m drivin’, drivin’
With my girl by my side
And the moon is up
Not a cloud to be seen
Is this an earthly delight
Or a heavenly dream
And I touch your arm
To make sure you’re real
That I’m not making this up
This is really how love feels

And the first star comes out
Starlight, star bright
You’re always the wish
That I wish for each night
And the hours fly by
Like the telephone lines
And the radio’s on
And we’re keeping the time
And I touch your arm
To make sure you’re real
That I’m not making this up
This is really how love feels

I want to promise you the world on a string
I want to swing you on a moonbeam, baby
I know this life is such a precious thing
And I want to stay with you forever

Now it’s getting real dark
It’s getting real late
And I’m taking you out
On a real long date
Past the Ohio line
Through the Kentucky night
And though the sky is so dark
My heart is so light
And I touch your arm
To make sure you’re real
That I’m not making this up
This is really how love feels

Grace

I flew away
I took you with me
On a plane bound for northern blue
You sat beside me
Staring out across the sky
“What are clouds made of?” you asked me
“Do you know what they are made of,
How do you know what they are made of, anyway?”

We landed lightly
Though with a heaviness
As we faced a family longing for before
We moved together
Holding hands and walking tight
“What are they thinking?” you asked me
“Do you know what they are thinking,
How do you know what they are thinking, anyway?”

CHORUS:

‘Cause we never plan on changing
Never think we could grow older
What we see in our reflection
Is a never changing face
But time moves on us quickly
And we bear up as the brave
As we walk this life with
Heart and Hope and Grace

I drove to Gainesville
And I was nervous
I hadn’t seen you in over twenty years
You looked the same to me
And I looked like my mom
“How you do stay the same?” you asked me
“Do you know you haven’t aged much,
How do you keep yourself from aging, anyway?”

And you were hesitant
To have me come there
Feeling old and blind and feeble in your years
And I was overwhelmed
With a flood of family tears
“Why has it been so long?” you asked me
“Do you know it seems forever,
And can you stay a little longer, anyway?”

CHORUS

A still life
A strong life
That’s taken for granted
‘Til it’s taken away
This real life
These Blessed years

My uncle Odvin
He’s passed a hundred
And we pray he’ll last at least few more years
Though he’s quite frail now
He’s far from letting go
“How have you stayed so long?” we asked you
“You seem to live forever
And does it feel like forever, anyway?

CHORUS

Let the Goodness In

I’ve got a mean streak
I like to call her Gin
She only shows herself
When I let the devil in
I’ve walked these mean streets
I’ve had a tough beginning
I’ve learned to look both ways and
Try not to let the devil in

CHORUS:

‘Cause it drives a wedge between my heart
And everything that I hold dear
It drives away the good and leaves me
Drowning in a pool of tears
It drives me to distraction and
Distraction keeps me running thin
I want to let the devil out
And let the goodness in

I’ve got a suitcase
I used to keep it packed
I wanted to make sure
That I could slip out the back
I was a fruit case
I couldn’t face my truths
I’ve learned to look both ways
And try not to let the devil loose

CHORUS

Surely I can make a difference
Surely I can defend my ways
Still to hope to stand resistant
But keep my wicked wiles at bay
I’ve got a good heart
Just no attention span
I’ll lend the closest ear
At least I think I can
I’ve made a new start
But still I jump the gun
I’ve learned to look both ways and
Try to keep the devil on the run

CHORUS

All Things Come Apart

Sailing long across the sky
Burning bright to say goodbye
Turning into target light
Why do all things come apart?
Why do all things come apart?

Breaking silence, breaking sound
Braking silent, broken down
Falling pieces to the ground
Why do all things come apart?
Why do all things come apart?

CHORUS:

Loved ones wait with open arms
Miles away and safe from harm
To never hear the pained alarm
Never knowing what went wrong
Trapped inside a burning blaze
Spinning on and on for days
Wicked nights and blistering rays
Why do all things come apart?
Why do all things come apart?

CHORUS

Is this the way it’s supposed to be?
Waiting long and patiently
Then you don’t come home to me
Why do all things come apart?
Why do all things come apart?
Why do all things come apart?

Further

I have walked through these hills
Just to carry these burdens away
And I have wandered through these lands
Just to carry me further away
From the killers
From the war mongers
From the demon that lives deep inside me
To the peacemakers
To the passion that will carry me further

I have witnessed more than my fair share
And I’ve carried these burdens alone
I have redressed as much as I dare
And it’s carried me further along
From the boasters
From the braggarts
From the demon that lives deep inside me
To the healers
To the passion that will carry me further

And I have been more
Than I ever thought I’d be
And I have traveled
Farther than the eye can see
But I still can’t find
The secret of peace in this world

I would swallow all of my pride
If it would carry your burdens away
And I would follow you to the ends of the earth
If it would carry us further away
From the hatred
From brutality
From the demon that lives deep inside me
To the heartbeat
To the passion that will carry us further

From the killing
From the warring
From the demon that lives deep inside me
To the center
Of the passion that will carry us further

Home To You

The trees are brown
The leaves are down
The nights are damp and cold
The skies are gray
They stay that way
And I am on the road
But still a warm place calls to me
And sets my compass west
I’ll drive these last miles long in style
And play my very best
For I am coming home to you
Home to you

With hair so dark
And eyes that spark
A fire in my soul
And laughter clear
That’s always here
Though I am on the road
But still a warm place calls to me
And sets my compass west
I’ll drive these last miles long in style
And play my very best
For I am coming home to you
Home to you

Hours and hours and hours I dream of you
I see to you. I feel for you
Days and days and days I wait for you
To see me too, to hold me

And when my lips
Can feel your kiss
And chase away resistance
Then in your hands
I will command
The road to keep its distance
‘Cause there’s a warm place calls to me
And sets my compass west
I’ll drive these last miles long in style
And play my very best
For I am coming home to you
Home to you

Spread It Around

CHORUS:

In the spring I take a deep breath
In the summer I’m looking for a ride
In the fall it’s all about the leaving
And in the winter I stay inside

If you take a long walk in the morning
You might find it makes a better day
And if you take some time in the evening
Your lover will never go away
And if you look to your own inspiration
The walls come tumbling down
Just reach for the light that’s deep inside and
Spread it around, spread it around

CHORUS

And when the sun beats hard on the Heartland
Say a prayer there’ll be a bit of rain
And when the snow falls smothering the wheat fields
Remember that the green will come again
And when fear runs heavy like a storm cloud
And thunder is a threatening sound
Just reach for the light that’s deep inside and
Spread it around, spread it around

CHORUS

And if you dance to the rhythm of your heartbeat
You’ll never find yourself without a song
And if you leave things better than you found them
You’ll never know the rite of being wrong
And if you stand for all that you believe in
You set yourself on higher ground
Just reach for the light that’s deep inside and
Spread it around, spread it around

CHORUS
